A Message from President Morishita: Inside East Bay, April 2020

  • April 6, 2020

The last few weeks have been filled with unprecedented news and daily changes to nearly all aspects of life.

With this in mind, I want to again extend my gratitude and praise to you, our faculty and staff, as well as the campus at large. The effort to move our campus operations online was a tremendous undertaking, involving creative solutions and quick problem-solving. From the faculty expressing messages of reassurance and sympathy to students to ITS who organized a technology drive-through to allow pick up of equipment, our campus responded to the county and state shelter in place orders in a safe and swift manner.

Our need for innovation as a university community continues as we look toward finishing the semester remotely. I know each of us are feeling tested as we consider how to meet the needs of our students in this new environment. With that in mind, I am excited to see how previously scheduled in-person events will evolve as they take place online. The CSU Research Symposium, for example, initially set to take place on our Hayward campus at the end of April, will now involve more than 200 student video presentations, judging and a live question and answer session, all online. Welcome Day, the annual event highlighting our university with information from each of our student service and academic units, will be featured as a virtual showcase coordinated by the Admissions and Outreach team. I greatly appreciate the work each of you are doing in the midst of such challenging circumstances, to engage and educate our students and future students.

As you may have heard, I was asked by Chancellor White to extend my tenure at 麻豆传媒社区入口 in an effort to provide continuity. I will continue as president until December 31 and the search for the next university president will be paused and restarted in the fall.

Finally, many of you have reached out to ask to help our students more directly. As I mentioned in my , the Presidential Pioneers Emergency Fund will provide immediate assistance to students to use towards meeting their basic needs, including shelter and food. Donations will be used for those experiencing hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lastly, there is one thing each of you can do to ensure your voice is heard. The 2020 Census is now available to complete and I urge each of you to check that your extended families and neighbors complete it as well. College students home due to the pandemic should still use their school address, per from the Census. You can even track the progress of completion by county using this . Even while sheltering in place, we can each do our part to ensure everyone is reminded to complete this fast and easy questionnaire. I completed mine on April 1 and it took less than ten minutes to complete.

Thank you for all that you do and please continue to be healthy and safe.

President Morishita also recently shared a about the importance of mental health and fighting xenophobia.
