Earth Day is April 22, but Cal State East bay will celebrate with a variety of events throughout the week of April 19 -22, on the Hayward campus,
April 19
Cannery Cafe Cooking Demonstration
El Dorado Hall
Noon-2 p.m.
The campus community can learn about the sustainable Hayward business that utilizes local partnerships to source its ingredients.
Clothing Swap
Diversity and Inclusion Center (DISC)
Noon-4 p.m.
Students, staff and faculty can come to donate clothes, browse and grab something for themselves.
April 20
ASI Earth Day Festival
Agora Stage
11 a.m.-2 p.m.
There will be music, giveaways and free food. Different clubs and organizations on campus will teach about sustainability.
Eco Car Show with Parking & Transportation Services
RAW Plaza
Noon-2 p.m.
Several models of eco-friendly cars will be on display. Tables at the event will highlight alternative transportation options.
Biology Department Plant Sale
Science Breezeway
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Students, faculty and staff can purchase non-GMO plants, including vegetables and wildflowers at the 2nd Annual Greenhouse Fundraiser.
Live Cube Reception
University Art Gallery
5:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Artists-in-residence at CSUEB’s University Gallery will host visits into the Live Cube, a one-room space that gives a glimpse of what Earth might be like in a resource-starved future. It tells the story of one man’s life in the dystopian society through the objects in his tiny house. As visitors explore the space, the objects they touch will trigger an audio excerpt of life in a world lacking sufficient water, energy and oil to support the population. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be provided.

April 21
Zero Waste Home Workshop

Noon-1 p.m.
Bea Johnson, North Bay blogger and author, will present ideas on how to create zero waste in your home and at work. The event is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and the Leadership and Employment Enrichment Program (LEEP). Lunch will be provided.
Meditation and Inner Sustainability Workshop

3:30-4:30 p.m.
Licensed massage therapist Marie Pehn will lead a 60-minute workshop to help the campus community learn about inner sustainability and conserving personal energy through meditation and mindfulness.
Book-to-Action: The Future of Food
Hayward City Hall
5-7:00 p.m.
Eat, Meet, & Greet! Oakland-based company, Blue Heron Catering, will provide a cooking demonstration and free food samples. Participants can network with local food policy, urban farming and food justice organizations.
7-9 p.m.
Panel presentations will be made by Dr. Liz Carlisle, Montana Organic founder and founder of Timeless Natural Foods, David Oien, the principal character of “Lentil Underground,” Dr. Lawrence Kushi, director of scientific policy at Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research and Dr. Ricardo Salvador, senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists and director of UCS’s Food & Environment Program.

The Office of Sustainability, with special guest Erin Brewster, CSU Chancellor’s Office sustainability program manager, will update the students, faculty and staff on what is being done to make CSU campuses more sustainable.
Sustainability in the Classroom: Addressing ‘Adultism’ and Other Inequalities

Noon-1 p.m.
Assistant Professor of Sociology Donovan Caesar will talk about the role of inequality as it pertains to sustainability. The discussion will examine and address issues of power in the classroom and in particular, the issue of ‘Adultism’ or youth inequality. Lunch will be provided.
