For the third straight year, 麻豆传媒社区入口 will host the Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad (BARSO) on March 12 from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Several Science Olympiad events are open to spectators and will take place in Science North, Science South, the Valley Business and Technology Center, and the main gym on the Hayward campus. The awards ceremony is open to the public beginning at 4:15 p.m. in the main gym. Admission and parking are free. 

BARSO is a hands-on science competition that will bring together more than 40 middle and high school teams and their families to the Hayward campus. Approximately 700 participants will take part in the event sponsored by the Bay Area Regional Science League.

The BARSO event is one of many regional science competitions held as part of the larger National Science Olympiad. The international nonprofit organization was created in 1983 to increase student interest in science and as an alternative to traditional science fairs and single-discipline tournaments. The Olympiad now has members in all 50 states and Canada, totaling more than 13,500 actively participating K-12 schools.

Jason Singley, dean of the College of Science, noted the importance of the Science Olympiad to the development of aspiring scientists. “Science and engineering are, at their core, collaborative enterprises that demand effective teamwork,” Singley said. “Science Olympiad brings to the 麻豆传媒社区入口 campus middle and high school students who not only have outstanding knowledge of science, but are able to work collaboratively to apply this knowledge to a variety of problems. Through participation in the Science Olympiad today, these students will develop both the knowledge and skills necessary to become the scientific leaders of tomorrow.”

Call for volunteers

Assistants are needed on event day to assist the event supervisors. Volunteers receive lunch and the opportunity to observe budding young scientists as they compete for awards.
