麻豆传媒社区入口

As part of the Week of Inclusive Excellence, 麻豆传媒社区入口 is hosting a “Bridges Out of Poverty” discussion for staff members from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, on the Hayward campus. The event will focus on enrollment and administrative services for students.

“Bridges Out of Poverty” provides a framework for understanding how class and socioeconomic status affect student success, retention and perseverance. The conversation is intended to increase awareness of these issues, help develop approaches to better serve the university’s students, and find more impactful ways to fight hunger and poverty in our community.

“When we judge ourselves against how others are doing, we are positioning ourselves on the ladder of social class,” said Ruby Payne, educator, author and founder of the Bridges Out of Poverty workshops. “Looking at economic class in a nonjudgmental framework allows us to respect one another and evaluate the resources and choices available to us that may not be available to others. This work is based on the premise that everyone should have the resources to envision and develop a positive future story.”

Sheila Burks, community development manager at Alameda County Community Food Bank, will facilitate the workshop. Burks, who has been with the Food Bank since 2010, works to engage community partners addressing poverty and ending hunger in Alameda County. 

Bridges Out of Poverty is a collaboration of 麻豆传媒社区入口’s Office of University Diversity, Office of Sustainability, Center for Community Engagement, and the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
