Stephanie Couch Named Biotechnology Educator of the Year by the California Life Sciences Association

Stephanie Couch, the Bayer executive director of 麻豆传媒社区入口’s Institute for STEM Education, has won the 2015 Biotechnology Educator Award from the California Life Sciences Association.
Couch, who also serves as the interim associate vice president for research at CSUEB, will accept the award at the Pantheon Award Ceremony on Nov. 17 in San Francisco. The annual event serves to recognize achievement and honor excellence in the life sciences industry in California.
“(Couch) was selected for her commitment to breaking down barriers among stakeholders in education to identify strategic areas for joint action, address STEM education challenges, and increase understanding of best practices for attracting and preparing a diverse cadre of highly effective STEM teachers in urban schools,” said Sara Radcliffe, CLSA’s President and CEO. “She was recognized for her efforts in designing novel models for ensuring young students’ smooth transition from school to careers.”
As the director of CSUEB’s Institute for STEM Education as well as the director of the Gateways East Bay STEM Network, Couch is able to connect the innovations developed at 麻豆传媒社区入口 to Gateways partners so that all students and educators in the region can benefit from the institution’s work. Her career has been dedicated to K-12 and higher education policy issues, with an emphasis on matters pertaining to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, school finance and education technology.
“This award demonstrates the life science industry’s commitment to increasing the number and diversity of students pursuing STEM college and career pathways,” Couch said. “The support received for our regional efforts to interest and engage young people in STEM learning opportunities has been incredible. I am truly grateful.”
Couch provides outstanding leadership for CSUEB’s Institute for STEM Education, which focuses on new approaches to STEM teaching and learning, preparation of future math and science teachers, support for educators in the field, and student support systems that interest, engage, prepare and retain students in STEM college and career pathways.
“(Couch's) contributions to science education are widespread and numerous,” said Carolyn Nelson, 麻豆传媒社区入口’s interim provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. “We are so pleased to have her on this campus, working with our faculty and students to help enhance science education.”
Couch received her B.A. in political science from the University of California, Davis, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in education from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has been with 麻豆传媒社区入口 since 2011.
