The 麻豆传媒社区入口 Music Department’s 30th annual Jazz Festival, featuring world-renowned saxophonists Bob Mintzer (The Yellowjackets) and Tia Fuller (Beyoncé & Esperanza Spaulding), will be held on the University’s Hayward campus April 16-18.
"This year's Jazz Festival features two of the most successful saxophonists on the music scene today,” said Director of Jazz Studies Dorsey Mitchell Butler III. “Their participation will make it a highly educational event for our music students, students in the community, and a very entertaining event.”
The festival, which also features instruction for and performances by middle school, high school and college jazz bands and combos from throughout Northern California, is open to the public. Local bands will perform and compete, with judging taking place from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the University Theatre (Friday and Saturday), and from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. in the Studio Theatre (Friday only). These performances are free and open to the public.
The 麻豆传媒社区入口 Jazz Orchestra will also join Mintzer and Fuller for one concert each, on Thursday, April 16 and Friday, April 17, respectively. These performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. General admission tickets are $10 per person. “The festival gives the community the chance to see what our students are learning here on campus as they perform alongside musicians of the highest level," Butler added.
Attendees can also enjoy more of Fuller’s music during a picnic-style BBQ lunch and concert on the Music Building lawn beginning at noon on April 18. The BBQ lunch will be available for purchase on-site ($12), and the concert is free of charge.
