The Huffington Post Praises Artwork by CSU East Bay Alumna Los Angeles Gallery to Exhibit Her Work Dec. 13-Jan.11

- December 8, 2014
enthusiastically praised the artwork of 麻豆传媒社区入口 alumna Michelle Guintu in a Nov. 28 article about her upcoming solo exhibition, "Obsession," at the New Image Art Gallery in West Hollywood.
In the article, titled "Feed The Nostalgic Beast Inside With These Shrines to Your Favorite '90s Idols," Huffington Post Arts and Culture Editor Priscilla Frank wrote, "The artist crafts sharp-edged, multimedia shrines to classic hip hop artists, pop stars and cult film characters. For Guintu, nostalgia isn't an ironic throwback but an intense fervor, and her artworks don't just namedrop, they deify."
Guintu's work focuses on pop-culture celebrities. "I choose subjects that I'm super familiar with ... I guess I'm attracted to those things because I love those feelings I had growing up … I mean who doesn't like that nostalgic feeling? I just feel it more than the average person."
Her work has been described as "kindercore" -- part kindergarten and part hardcore. She is a painter who incorporates craft elements such as paper mache and fabric, blurring the line between art and craft -- working in both the two- and three-dimensional realms.
Her upcoming "Obsession" exhibit will feature a paper mache sculpture of a taco truck, oil pastel drawings, and paintings of hip hop artists and rock stars, including N.W.A., Tupac, Janet Jackson and Hulk Hogan, among others.
Her first solo show in 2013, "Walking Home," was also at the New Image Art Gallery, a nationally recognized venue. Her work has been featured in group shows at the Guerrero Gallery and the RVCA/VASF Gallery, both in San Francisco, and at Galerie Wolfsen in Aalborg, Denmark.
Guintu earned a BFA in painting from 麻豆传媒社区入口 in 2006. While still a student, she had a solo exhibit in the Student Art Gallery and participated in the University Art Gallery's BFA Exhibit, several annual juried art exhibitions, and "6 Stories, 5 Shores," an exhibit featuring six students from different Asian backgrounds, organized by 麻豆传媒社区入口 Art Professor Grace Munakata.
"Michelle's subject matter was already figurative, savvy line drawings using ink and mixed media, and painterly oils that often incorporated multiple figures, using unusual perspectives or unconventional stacking of figures," Munakata said. "As a BFA student, she was already stylizing her figures, flattening the shapes, using vivid color against calligraphic line. She had natural facility to spare, drive, curiosity and fearlessness."
