Laura Lam, successful fantasy novels writer and 麻豆传媒社区入口 alumnus, will read from and discuss her latest book, “Shadowplay” Wednesday, Jan. 8, as part of 麻豆传媒社区入口’s Distinguished Writers Series, presented by the university’s English Department.

The 6 p.m. event will be held in the Biella Room of the University Library on CSUEB's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. Admission is free and the public is invited. A book signing and question and answer session will follow.

According to her Web site, Lam was raised by her parents – two former San Francisco Haight-Ashbury hippies – who encouraged her to finger paint, color outside the lines, and consider the library to be like a second home. The former Castro Valley resident recently relocated to Scotland to be with her husband, who she met on the Internet.

Lam is the author of “Pantomime,” a fantasy novel published earlier this year by Strange Chemistry Books. This work has been nominated for the 2014 ALA Rainbow List and has been shortlisted for the 2014 NE Teen Book Award.

“Shadowplay,” the sequel to Pantomime, will be available for purchase following Lam’s Distinguished Writers Series presentation and through the 麻豆传媒社区入口 bookstore.

“We're especially excited and proud to have Laura return to our campus,” said Steve Gutierrez, director of the Distinguished Writers Series and professor of English at 麻豆传媒社区入口. “She's an exceptionally talented writer making a name for herself, as I always suspected she would.  It will be a treat to hear her read."

Lam earned a bachelor’s degree in English from CSUEB in 2009.
