Athletics Department to honor reading program participants
- December 4, 2012
The 麻豆传媒社区入口 Athletics Department is set to celebrate its Read With the Pioneers participants during Reading Day at a Pioneer basketball doubleheader later this month. This year’s 448 participants, who combined to read 205,000 pages, will be honored at the Jan. 12 basketball games against Cal Poly Pomona at Pioneer Gym.
The Read with the Pioneers Program works to encourage at-home reading among Hayward-area elementary school students. During the month of November, participants keep a log of the number of pages they read and report their totals to teachers at the end of the month. Over the past three years, the reading program has grown from just 20 participants at one school to more than 400 at four local schools. This year’s participants included Harder, Fairview and Burbank Elementary Schools, as well as St. John Catholic School.
“We are so excited to see the number of participating schools and students continue to increase each year,” Assistant Athletics Director and Reading Program Coordinator Dawn Ellerbe said. “We have made enormous strides in participation since our first year. We are looking forward to having the students from Harder, Fairview, and Burbank Elementary Schools, along with St. John Catholic School on campus next weekend to celebrate Reading Day. This program is something we look forward to each year and we could not be more proud of the participants.”
As an incentive to read, students who participate receive four tickets to Reading Day at Pioneer basketball on Jan. 12, a Pioneer Pride t-shirt and a new book courtesy of the Pioneer Bookstore, a reading program partner. In addition, the students in attendance will be recognized during halftime of the basketball games and the top readers from each school and the school with the most pages read will all receive awards for their achievements.
