CSU Faculty Pickets Continue, Strike Planned
- November 9, 2011
Long Beach - Unionized Cal State's faculty members handed out informational material on all 23 campuses in advance of a one-day strike planned at two campuses Nov. 17.
At issue for the 23,000-member California Faculty Association is Chancellor Charles Reed's decision to withhold raises negotiated for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years due to state funding cuts.
The union plans strikes Nov. 17 at Cal State Dominguez Hills and 麻豆传媒社区入口.
Tuesday's informational "picketing," which was not expected to disrupt classes, is intended to show the chancellor that his "priorities are off base," said Lillian Taiz, president of the CFA and a history professor at Cal State Los Angeles.
"Once and for all, he must do what is best for students and the future of our public university system instead of making decisions based on keeping his management team happy," she said.
CFA members at all 23 campuses also will hand out informational material on Wednesday.
The strike would be the first by the union since it won the right to collective bargaining in 1983.
Some students are upset over tuition costs rising more than 20 percent over the past year, while state funding has been cut.
Cal State officials say the university system could lose another $100 million in funding in the middle of this fiscal year, if state revenue projections fall short. The Cal State system and University of California system each had its state funding reduced by about $650 million this year.
