R.A.W. Center grand opening
Fitness is no. 1 at CSUEB after the grand opening on 1-11-11 of the new student Recreation and Wellness Center. The new facility on the site of the former student services hub, was funded by student fees established in coordination with ASI and other student groups.
Plans began in 2007, with feasibility studies and campus forums that brought in feedback from more than 1,000 students. The final design is a 54,000-square-foot building with sustainable design from the roof (designed for heating and cooling) to the roots (water-efficient landscaping).
Inside, the “R.A.W.” center has a multi-court gymnasium surrounded by an elevated jogging track; a fitness center with exercise machines and free weights; multipurpose fitness and activity rooms for aerobics, martial arts and dancing, as well as locker rooms and administrative offices. For post-workout pick-me-ups, there’s even a Jamba Juice in the lobby.
The bagel has landed
CSUEB Dining Services announced the long awaited opening of Einstein Bros. Bagels outside the North Science building, across from the VBT and the new administration building. Doors officially opened March 7 with a grand opening celebration and a year of free breakfast sandwiches for the first 50 people in line.
With fresh bagels, smoothies, coffee, snacks and even ready-to-go salads, it’s an ideal spot to grab breakfast on the way in to campus, or a snack on the way out in the afternoon. Hours are 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.
Homecoming 2011: Red & Black Attack
This year’s festivities, from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, brought back some favorite traditions — like the East Bay Idol competitions to select talented students to perform at basketball games and the always-stunning Pioneer Pride fashion show — and added some new twists, including an office decorating contest and a dunk tank at the Homecoming Faire to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Baseball and men’s and women’s basketball saw hard-fought losses, but softball and water polo kept spirits high with Homecoming wins.
