Dale Liss, of Fremont, is one of the nation's top McDonald's restaurant managers. He will be receiving the Ray Kroc Award, an annual performance-based award that recognizes the top-performing McDonald's restaurant managers in the country.A select 141 managers were chosen this year to receive the Ray Kroc Award, an honor that comes with a cash award, a Ray Kroc award trophy, a ring, pin and a trip to an awards banquet/gala at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago on April 5, hosted by Jan Fields, president of McDonald's USA.
Liss has worked for McDonald's for 30 years, has held manager positions at two different restaurants, and has managed the Fremont Boulevard and Mowry Avenue location for 16 years. He is a Washington Hospital Foundation member and raises funds for local hospice services for Washington Hospital through the "Trees of Angels" campaign, where his restaurant is very active.
Lori Moore, of Fremont, a student at 麻豆传媒社区入口 in Hayward, has been named a semifinalist in the Class of 2011 Presidential Management Fellows Program run by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. The program is an opportunity for graduate students to find federal agency employment and start a public service career. Only 1,530 semifinalists were selected from more than 9,100 applicants nationwide. They were chosen based on university nominations, resume, writing sample essays and assessment tests.The field will be narrowed to a group of finalists based on the results of the in-person assessment tests, given at local assessment centers in February and March. Finalists are then invited to attend a Finalists Job Fair, held in Washington, D.C., in April.
Moore, 51, hopes to pursue a career in public service after graduating in June. Her degree will be a master's in public administration -- public management and public human resources management.Elizabeth Chavez, a kindergarten and first-grade teacher at Kennedy Elementary School in Newark, recently won a $1,000 grant in a Del Monte Foods contest. She was one of 49 other teachers across the US and Canada who were awarded this classroom grant -- $750 in cash and $250 in fruit gift certificates for use in their classrooms.
Teachers had to write a short essay on why they should receive the grant and how the money would help their classrooms. Chavez described how she would use the fresh fruit throughout the year to enhance the children's learning about healthy eating. She also plans to incorporate the healthy foods into other lessons, such as science and math.The award will be used to plant new crops in the school garden and to take the students on a field trip to nearby Ardenwood Historic Farm, where the kids will learn about organic farming in their own community.
Chavez also got to select, from a list, a Guatemalan school that also will receive a $1,000 grant for school repairs, construction and classroom supplies.Army National Guard Spc. Chad Foster has graduated from nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.Foster earned distinction as an honor graduate.He graduated in 1997 from James Logan High School in Union City, and received a bachelor's degree in 2002 from UC Santa Barbara.
