Pioneers earn Sunday split with No. 1 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team earned a split with #1 UC San Diego on February 20. East Bay took the first game, 8-4, while UC San Diego captured the second contest and the four-game series, 7-2.
Pioneer hurler A.J. Gallardo improved to 2-1 for the season as he yielded four runs on five hits with one strikeout. Reliever Zach Wong picked up the save as he held the Tritons scoreless in the final 2.1 innings. Wong allowed one hit and had two strikeouts.
Charlie Sharrer doubled home Andrew Woolfe to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead in the first.
UC San Diego scored three runs in the third inning to grab a 3-1 advantage. Aaron Bauman tripled home a pair of runs for the Tritons.
The Pioneers regained the lead with a four-run, fourth inning. Bret Gibson had a run-scoring single while Jake Davis reached home on a stolen base enabling the Pioneers to grab a 5-3 advantage.
UC San Diego scored a run in the sixth to narrow the Pioneer's lead to 5-4.
East Bay pushed across an unearned run in the seventh and secured the victory with two runs in the ninth inning. Jared Berrier walked to open the ninth inning and later scored on a Nick McManus single. Gibson walked with the bases loaded to score Woolfe.
The Pioneers banged out 11 hits in the win. Woolfe, Sharrer and Davis all had two hits. Berrier and Woolfe scored twice while Gibson drove in a pair of runs.
In the second game, the Tritons took an early 1-0 lead in the first. UC San Diego added two runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning.
East Bay scored twice in the fifth as McManus and Sharrer each drove in a run.
Woolfe and McManus had two hits each. Reliever Brandyn Bell hurled a scoreless sixth inning.
The Pioneers will face Cal State Stanislaus in a four-game series on February 25-27.
