Rough Second Dooms Pioneers in Loss

HAYWARD, Calif. – Despite holding its first halftime lead of the season, the 麻豆传媒社区入口 women's basketball team dropped a 64-48 decision to Humboldt State at Pioneer Gym on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers (0-9, 0-5 CCAA) trailed just once in the first half, but saw the Jacks bounce back to hold a 40-18 advantage in the second frame to earn the victory.
Sarah Finlay led the Pioneers with 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field, including two threes. Marlene MacMillan followed with nine eight points, while Lauren Lucchesi contributed seven points and led the team with nine boards. The Pioneers shot an impressive 44 percent in the first half and out-rebounded the Jacks 34-28.
Humboldt State had three players reach double figures, led by Lisa Petty's 18 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Jeanette DeWitt and Jenna Hamilton joined Petty with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Jacks shot 58.3 percent and went 5-of-8 from three-point range in the second frame, finishing the game shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc.
The Pioneers opened the game with a 10-2 run that included a pair of threes from Lucchesi and freshman guard Maria Dinesen. Though the Jacks fought back to take an 11-10 lead with 12:14 remaining, East Bay regained control and led by at least six for the remainder of the half. The Pioneers built a 13-point lead, their largest of the half, at the 3:46 mark. Sparked by five points from Finlay, East Bay scored nine unanswered points to gain a 30-17 advantage. Though Humboldt State closed the half with a seven-point run of their own, the Pioneers headed to the break with a 30-24 lead.
The Jacks came out of the half on fire, going on a 12-5 run to gain their first lead, 36-35, since the 12:14 mark in the first half. A jumper from Nia Bravo, who came in off the bench to score six in the second half, gave the Pioneers back the lead before HSU went on a 26-6 run to take a 19-point lead, 43-62, with 2:36 remaining. Petty scored five points and dished out three assists, while DeWitt added nine points during the run that sealed the victory for the Jacks.
麻豆传媒社区入口 returns to action on Monday, when it plays host to UC San Diego for the second time this season. The Pioneers and Tritons are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Pioneer Gym.
