SEASIDE, Calif. – The 麻豆传媒社区入口 women's basketball team lost its second straight game to open the CCAA season, dropping a 56-38 decision to Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night. The Pioneers (0-4, 0-2 CCAA) trailed by just two at the half, but struggled in the second half, shooting just 19.2 percent and scoring just 16 points.

"We played an outstanding first half," CSUEB Head Coach Suzy Barcomb said. "We played well both offensively and defensively which allowed us to be in the game against a talented Monterey Bay team."

Cassie Coble paced the Pioneers with 15 points, a season high for the freshman forward, while sophomore Marlene MacMillan led the East Bay on the glass with her third straight double digit rebounding effort, pulling down 10 boards. London Houchin's 14 points and Julie Heurung's nine rebounds led the Otters.

Though Cal State Monterey Bay led by as many as nine points in the first half, opening up a 17-8 lead with 10:34 remaining, the Pioneers answered back with a 12-3 run sparked by a pair of free throws from senior Claudia Nelson. The run spanned six minutes and saw East Bay force three turnovers and pull down 13 rebounds while pulling even with the Otters, 20-20 with 3:21 left in the half. After the two teams traded buckets, Monterey Bay closed the first frame with a layup to take a 24-22 lead into the break.

The Otters opened the second frame with a 20-4 run to take a 44-26 lead. During the run, which spanned 11 minutes, Monterey Bay hit four three-pointers and forced four Pioneer turnovers. East Bay hit just two field goals in the first 14 minutes of the half and went on a six-minute scoring drought from the field while the Otters increased their lead to 18 for a second time before Coble knocked down a three with 5:22 remaining to cut the lead to 48-33.

"We came out completely flat in the second half," Barcomb said. "We didn't execute on either end of the floor. We have to play two halves of solid basketball in order to compete in the CCAA."

Cal State Monterey responded with eight straight points to increase its lead to 23. Though Coble hit her third three of the game and MacMillan ended the half with a jumper, East Bay could not close the gap. The Pioneers went just 5-for-26 from the floor in the half to finish the game with a 26.4 shooting percentage and hit just two of their seven three-point attempts.

麻豆传媒社区入口 held onto the ball better than in Friday's loss to SFSU, turning the ball over just 15 times and forcing 18 Otter turnovers. Monterey Bay held just a two-rebound advantage on the boards, 39-37, but shot 39.7 percent from the field, including going 4-of-8 from three-point range in the second half.
The Pioneers return to action next weekend when they travel to Arcata for the Pac West/CCAA Challenge. East Bay will take on Dominican on Dec. 11 at 3:30 p.m. before facing Academy of Art on Dec. 12 at 1 p.m.
