BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Despite improving on last night's performance by 20 points, the 麻豆传媒社区入口 women's basketball team could not overcome a 15-point halftime deficit, falling to St. Martin's, 70-59, on the final day of the Lynda Goodrich Classic at Western Washington. The Pioneers (0-2), who never trailed by more than 19 in the game, made a second-half comeback effort that saw them close the gap to as little as seven points and had three players reach double digits in scoring.

"We competed in spurts tonight; now we need consistency" CSUEB Head Coach Suzy Barcomb said. "Marlene [MacMillan] boarded really well and Cassie [Coble] played hard. We executed well, played hard and took some positive steps."

Freshman Cassie Coble, sophomore Lauren Lucchesi and senior Claudia Nelson led East Bay, each notching 10 points in the loss. Nelson went 5-for-11 from the field and Lucchesi knocked down a pair of threes, while sophomore Marlene MacMillan paced the Pioneers on the boards for the second straight night, notching a game-high 11 rebounds and dishing out six assists.

The two teams traded three pointers to open the game and a Maria Dinesen layup gave the Pioneers their first and only lead of the game, 5-3. The Saints responded with an 18-4 run that spanned seven minutes and saw SMU hit three shots from beyond the arc, while the Pioneers were held to just two field goals during that span.

Though East Bay was able to close the gap to just nine twice, the Saints opened an 18-point lead, 34-16, with four minutes remaining in the half. The Pioneers answered with a 7-2 run to close the gap to 36-23 before a jumper from Andrea Schutt gave the Saints a 38-23 advantage at the half.

The Pioneers opened the second frame with seven unanswered points, sparked by a pair of jumpers from Nelson. Leading by just eight with 17:15 remaining, St. Martin's pushed its lead back to 15 over the next four minutes, but the Pioneers responded again, this time cutting the Saints' advantage to seven, their smallest lead in 25 minutes. East Bay's 10-2 run opened with the three pointer from Frieda Li and was capped by another three from Coble to bring the score to 49-41 with nine minutes left in the second half.

The Saints followed with 12 straight points that included a pair of threes from Roni Jo Mielke to regain a 19-point advantage, 63-44, with 5:24 remaining. Though the Pioneers closed the gap to as little as nine twice, they could not overcome St. Martin's blistering 56.5 percent shooting, including 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range, in the second frame.

"We played a very solid second half," Barcomb said. "We made a couple of big runs, we just couldn't get stops when we needed to."

The second half saw the Pioneers shoot 48.3 percent from the field and force 14 Saints turnovers that led to 17 points. East Bay struggled from the free-throw line for the second night, hitting just 58.8 percent of its chances at the charity stripe, but went 5-of-15 from three-point range to improve on Friday's 1-for-10 performance.

SMU finished with a 35-34 advantage on the glass and made the most of its 12 offensive boards, scoring 16 second-chance points. The Saints had four players in double figures, led by Kelsey Baker's 16 points on near-perfect 7-of-9 shooting from the field.

Lucchesi earned a spot on the Goodrich Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, while shooting 40 percent from the field over the two games. Host Western Washington and St. Martin's shared the tournament title, while the Vikings' Amanda Dunbar was named tournament MVP. WWU's Gabby Wade, the Saints' Dara Zack and Marelle Moehrle, and Montana State Northern's Taylor Keller joined Lucchesi and Dunbar on the All-Tournament Team.

麻豆传媒社区入口 returns to action on Friday, Dec. 3 when it opens the CCAA season at San Francisco State. The Pioneers will meet the Gators in the Battle of the Bay at 5:30 p.m. at the Main Gym on the SFSU campus.
