- October 8, 2010
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite allowing three first half goals, the 麻豆传媒社区入口 women's soccer team put together a quality effort in a 3-0 loss at Cal State LA on Friday night. The Pioneers (5-5-2, 3-5-1 CCAA) held the Golden Eagles scoreless over the final 62 minutes, but could not find the back of the net, although they outshot LA in the second frame.
"I'm happy with our team effort and the way our team played, especially in the second half," CSUEB Head Coach Amy Gerace said. "LA is such a quality team that they are going to capitalize on any opportunities given to them. To go out and outshoot them in the second half shows the character and dedication our team demonstrates."
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead on just their second shot of the match. After Stacey Rodwell and Natalie Martin strung together a few passes, Rodwell played the ball to Ann Marie Tangorra who put away her eighth goal of the season past CSUEB keeper Nina Cefalo.
Cal State LA keeper Gabriella Batmani held onto the early 1-0 lead with a pair of saves early on before the Golden Eagles scored an insurance goal in the 21st minute. Tangorra notched her second of the match with a quick strike from the top of the box that beat Cefalo to give LA a two-goal advantage.
Just seven minutes later, the Golden Eagles posted closed out the scoring in the game with a goal from Rodwell off a free kick at the top of the box in the 28th minute.
Trailing 3-0, the Pioneers looked to get on the board before the break, but managed just one shot from senior Michelle Garcia, who forced a Batmani save to maintain the first half shutout. The Golden Eagles only had a one-shot advantage in the first frame, putting all six of their shots on goal. Batmani required five saves in the opening half, sending East Bay to the half with a three-goal deficit.
The Pioneers came out of the half looking to find the back of the net, opening the half with three straight shots on goal to force three Batmani stops. East Bay's second half starter in goal, Donna Williams, needed just one save in the opening 20 minutes to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless before she received a yellow card and was replaced by Cefalo.
Though the Pioneers could not manage to get past Batmani, who made four saves in the second half, they held the Golden Eagles to just two shots in the final 45 minutes of play. The Pioneer defense kept LA scoreless over the final 60 minutes of play, marking quite a turnaround from the teams' first meeting this year that saw the Golden Eagles post a 6-0 victory.
"Of course I would prefer a different result, but had a number of positives tonight," Gerace said. "We possessed the ball well, stuck to the game plan and supported each other for the full 90 minutes. In watching game film from our first match against LA, the difference in our team play was evident and the players can see their improvement over the past month."
The Pioneers finished the game with a 10-8 advantage in shots, led by Shannon Fontes and Garcia, who posted two shots apiece. Cefalo made three saves, while Williams posted one in 27 minutes of play. The Golden Eagles were paced by Tangorra's two strikes and saw Batmani make eight stops to post the shutout victory.
麻豆传媒社区入口 returns to the field on Sunday, when it meets Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. The Pioneers and Toros are set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Toro Stadium.
