ARCATA, Calif. - The Pioneers opened the second half of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on a successful note, defeating host Humboldt State in four sets (25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-14) on Oct. 15.
With the win, the 23rd-ranked Pioneers improved to 8-4 in conference play and improve to 13-4 overall. Humboldt State stands at 1-11 in conference action and 1-15 for the season, marking their second loss to East Bay this season.
For the match, the Pioneers had 55 kills compared to 34 for the Jacks. East Bay was solid on defense with 73 digs and played effectively in the middle with 18 blocks.
Katie Allen put down a match-high 16 kills followed by Jit Athwal with 14 attacks. Kitona Offord contributed to the Pioneer victory with 11 kills. The Pioneers received good production from setters K.C. Walsh and Roxanne Neely with 24 and 23 assists respectively. Lauren Massa had another good match in the back row with 21 digs.
Humboldt State was led by Oceana Matsubu with nine kills. Taylor Manuel followed with eight offensive attacks.
Leading 6-5, the Pioneers went on an 11-5 run to take a 17-10 advantage in the first set. East Bay maintained a 22-14 lead and won the set on a Jacks service error and attack error. Offord had four kills followed by Athwal with three attacks.
The Pioneers overcame an 8-4 deficit to tie the Jacks 9-9 in the second set. East Bay scored the next three points to take a 12-9 lead. Allen’s consecutive kills maintained a 21-16 Pioneer advantage. East Bay iced the second set on a Brianna Bryant kill. As a team, the Pioneers hit .353 in the second set.
Led by Allen’s four kills, the Pioneers jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set. Humboldt State took a 13-11 advantage aided by three Matsubu kills. The Jacks maintained a 21-17 lead over the Pioneers. Consecutive kills by Offord enabled the Pioneers to close the gap to 21-19. Humboldt State scored two unanswered points including an ace by Joliann Arzadon and won the set on a Pioneer attack error.
East Bay took an 11-3 lead in the fourth set highlighted by three Allen kills. Neely’s kill maintained a 20-10 advantage for the Pioneers. East Bay captured the fourth set and the match on a kill by Neely.
The Pioneers will play at Sonoma State on October 16. First serve is at 7 p.m.
