Pioneers withstand Chico State rally to win in five sets

HAYWARD, Calif. - The 麻豆传媒社区入口 volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 advantage and held off a Chico State comeback to defeat the Wildcats in five sets 25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 23-25, 15-10 on Oct. 29 at Pioneer Gym. With the victory, the Pioneers are now 5-0 in five-set matches this season and improved to 17-5 overall and 12-5 in CCAA play with the victory.
As a team, the Pioneers recorded 65 kills and hit at a .329 clip. The Pioneers were impressive at the net and the service line, posting 16 blocks and adding nine service aces.
Brianna Bryant had an excellent match for the Pioneers with 16 kills, while hitting .444 with three solo blocks. Jit Athwal recorded a double-double for the Pioneers with 13 kills and 10 digs. Roxanne Neely had an outstanding match all around, notching a triple-double with 12 kills, 18 assists and 11 digs, and adding four service aces.
The Wildcats’ Alex Shurtz put down a match-high 22 kills while hitting .370 on the night. Jessica Leek added 17 kills for Chico State.
The Pioneers hit for an impressive .517 percentage and led throughout in taking the first set. An Athwal kill and a block solo by Bryant gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.
East Bay’s tenacious hitting continued in the second set converting 12 of 26 attempts good for a .462 percentage. The Pioneers opened up an 18-9 advantage and never trailed from that point. Neely led the way with four kills as the Pioneers took a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third set was close throughout with neither team leading by more than three points. The Pioneers took a 21-20 lead on a Bryant kill before Chico State went ahead 23-22 on a kill by Leek. Two Pioneer attack errors enabled the Wildcats to take the third set.
Chico State overcame a 16-14 deficit with a 10-2 run to lead 24-18 in the fourth set. The Pioneers scored five unanswered points to trail 24-23 before Jacqueline Johnson put down a kill to give the Wildcats the set and tie the match.
With the scored tied 5-5 in the fifth set, East Bay ran off five consecutive points highlighted by two Katie Allen kills to take a 10-5 lead. With the Pioneers leading 14-10, Allen recorded her fourth kill of the set enabling East Bay to win the match and improve its home record to 9-2.
麻豆传媒社区入口 will play its final home match of the season on Oct. 30 against Cal State Stanislaus, beginning at 7 p.m. Prior to the start of the match, the Pioneers will honor their eight seniors in a special ceremony. As part of the Pioneers’ Canned Food Drive to benefit the Alameda County Community Food Bank, fans who bring three canned food items to the match will get in free.
