Pioneers finish opening week undefeated with sweep at Nanook Classic

Freshman outside hitter Katie Allen led the Pioneers with 24 kills in two victories on Saturday and earned All-Tournament Team honors.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The 麻豆传媒社区入口 women's volleyball team remained undefeated this season following a 3-0 win over Charleston and 3-1 victory over Alaska Fairbanks to take home the Nanook Classic title on Saturday. The Pioneers (4-0) topped Charleston 25-21, 25-15, 30-28, before picking up their second win of the week over Alaska Fairbanks, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21.

In game one, East Bay took a 19-11 lead following an Ariel Ajagu kill in the first set. Charleston narrowed the gap to 24-21 before a kill from Ajagu gave the Pioneers the game-one win.

The Pioneers never trailed in the second set, taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win.

In the third set, Katie Allen's kill gave the Pioneers a 26-25 lead. Charleston's Emmalee Luther tied the set with a kill before Mallery Hardison followed with a kill to put Charleston up 27-26. The Pioneers regained the lead 28-27 on two Charleston errors. Charleston still had fuel left in the tank, however, rallying to tiethe set on a Luther kill. The Pioneers responded with kills from Ajagu and Cara Crowder to earn the win and the three-game sweep.

East Bay recorded a season-best 53 kills and a hit for a .303 percentage. The Pioneers played well on defense with 46 digs.

Allen led the Pioneers with 15 kills followed by Brianna Bryant and Roxanne Neely with eight attacks each.  Neely added 20 assists.

K.C. Walsh had another solid match with 21 assists, seven kills, and a .400 hitting percentage, while Crowder hit for a .500 hitting percentage and recorded seven kills.

The Pioneers rounded out the tournament with their second 3-1 victory over Alaska Fairbanks this season.

With the match tied 1-1, the Pioneers took a commanding 19-6 lead in the third set on a K.C. Walsh ace. Alaska Fairbanks narrowed the gap to 23-17. A kill by Crowder followed by a Bryant block, gave the Pioneers the third set victory.

In the fourth set, East Bay jumped out to an 11-6 lead on a Crowder kill. A CSUEB error enabled Alaska Fairbanks to take an 18-17 lead. Neely's kill gave the Pioneers a 19-18 advantage. The Pioneers won the set and the match on a kill by Allen.

East Bay was again led by Allen, who recorded a season-high 19 kills. Crowder followed with 14 attacks and a .344 hitting percentage.

The Pioneers got great production from their setters, Walsh and Neely who had 29 and 26 assists respectively. Lauren Massa recorded a team-high 24 digs.

Massa's weekend performance earned her Nanook Classic MVP honors after leading the Pioneer defense with 57 digs over three matches. Allen, who paced the East Bay attack with 46 kills and hit at a .316 clip, joined Massa on the All-Tournament Team.

The Pioneers will play their home opener on Sept. 7 against Notre Dame de Namur.
