- September 10, 2010
HAYWARD,Calif. – The 麻豆传媒社区入口 men's soccer team fell to 19th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-0, in both teams CCAA opener on Friday night at Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers (1-3-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) allowed three second-half goals in their first regular season match played at the newly-renovated Pioneer Stadium.
"CSUDH is a solid team and they made us pay for our mistakes," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "We started nine freshman and we have 19 on our roster – with only one senior. We definitely lack experience at this level."
The Toros got started in the 11th minute, as Miguel Vasquez struck from 15 yards out to put Dominguez Hills up 1-0 early on. CSUDH continued to control possession, scoring again 15 minutes later on a well-struck shot on the ground by Scott Locken that deflected off two defenders and under the arms of East Bay freshman keeper Patrick Gilbertson.
Despite the Toros' out-shooting the Pioneers 15-3 in the first frame, East Bay's young backline – comprised of only freshmen starters – worked to hold Dominguez Hills scoreless over the final 19 minutes leading into the half. Both CSUDH keeper Markus Dickerson and Gilbertson made a save each in the first half.
Leading 2-0, Cal State Dominguez Hills continued to work towards goal in the second half. Nearly 20 minutes into the final frame, Locken added his second goal of the game, scoring on a header off a rebound from a shot that came off the post.
Just four minutes later, the Toros struck again, as Diego Turoldo notched Dominguez Hills' fourth goal of the game. Six minutes later, Greg Piechota rounded out scoring with a header flick that he sent past Gilbertson from 10 yards out to put the Toros up 5-0.
The second half saw the Pioneer offense put more pressure on Dickerson and the Toro defense, taking four shots and creating several scoring chances. Freshman Alexis Romo forced Dickerson to make two saves, while senior Sean Lynum-Young looked set to put away a consolation goal with less than a minute remaining. After Romo played East Bay's fourth corner kick of the match into the box, Lynum-Young connected on a header from close range, but Dickerson showed off his shot-stopping abilities with a save on the move from point-blank range.
麻豆传媒社区入口, a young squad even with several key players who are out due to injury, was led by Romo's three shots on the day. The Toros out-shot the Pioneers 29-7, forcing Gilbertson to make six saves in the losing effort.
"We had some positive moments and generated some good chances, but we also had some moments of poor decisions and Dominguez Hills made us pay for them," Cumbo said. "We have a lot of potential and will get better. We will be much improved when our four injured starters get back. This is a tough conference but we're confident we will adapt to it."
Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 2-0-1 and was led by Piechota's seven strikes. Dickerson needed four saves to keep the Pioneers out of the back of the net and pick up the win.
The Pioneers get back into the thick of things on Sunday, when they meet No. 2 Cal State LA. The Golden Eagles notcheda 3-0 victory over UC San Diego on Friday and bring a 2-0-0 record into their meeting with the Pioneers. The match is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Pioneer Stadium.
