Pioneers Head to Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock

HAYWARD, Calif. - The 麻豆传媒社区入口 softball team is set to play at least six games this weekend when it travels to the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. The three-day event will feature 73 games and 22 teams, including No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific, No. 14 Sonoma State and No. 18 Grand Canyon.
The Pioneers (7-15) will open the tournament on Friday afternoon, meeting Montana State Billings at 4:15 p.m. before taking on Central Washington at 8 p.m. Saturday's schedule kicks off with No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific at 9:30 a.m., followed by a matchup with St. Martin's at 11:45 a.m., before capping the day with Northwest Nazarene at 4:15 p.m. On Sunday, the top two teams form each pool will move on to the Gold Bracket to contend for the championship, the third- and fourth-place teams from each pool will face off in the Silver Bracket and the final two squads from each pool will meet in the Bronze Bracket.
East Bay will face a tough test this weekend, as it will play five games in the first two days of the tournament, including three on Saturday. The Pioneers are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Dominican last weekend that saw them record their first eight-run rule victories of the season. Freshman first baseman Emily Montanez led CSUEB on the day, going 5-for-6 at the plate with five RBI and a two-run homer. Both freshman Lauren Zweigle and junior Cat Schorn picked up wins in the circle, while freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado went 3-for-5, scoring three runs and driving in two.
Senior Sarah Davini is batting .385 on the season to lead the Pioneers and rank seventh in the conference. Her 14 runs and 15 walks also pace East Bay, while her .529 on-base percentage is tops on the team and in the CCAA. Senior catcher Rachelle Boone's 11 RBI leads the Pioneers, while Montanez and Coronado are batting .357 and .288, respectively.
In the circle, Schorn has posted five wins on the year and carries a 4.70 ERA into the weekend tournament. Zweigle is tied for sixth in the conference with 55 strikeouts in 67.2 innings of work and has posted a 3.72 ERA.
MSU Billings (11-10) has won five of its last eight games, including the final game of last weekend's four-game set with Central Washington. The Yellowjackets are led by junior Kaycee Hoffman's .356 batting average and junior Kelly Parson's 15 RBI and four homeruns. A pair of seniors in Stevie Howard and Whitney Whittemore have accounted for 13 runs apiece, while Hoffman sits in a close second with 12. Junior hurler Lindsey Trenary has posted a 7-2 record, striking out 32 in 58 innings and accumulating a 2.66 ERA.
Central Washington is coming off a 3-1 weekend against the Yellowjackets and enters the tournament with a 13-5 record. The Wildcats have won nine of their last 10 games, earning three run-rule victories during that span. CWU is led by senior outfielder Danielle Monson, who is hitting .500 on the year while scoring 18 runs. Meanwhile, juniors Samantha Petrich and Kelsey Haupert are also having monster years at the plate, with Petrich batting .373 and leading the team with five homers, 22 runs, 14 walks and a .745 on-base percentage, and Haupert batting .340 with a team-leading 30 RBI. As a team, the Wildcats are batting .342 on the year.
Central Washington is also on fire in the circle, as junior Lauren Hadenfield is the reigning Great Northwest Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing two shutouts last weeekend, including a no-hitter on Saturday. Hadenfield is 8-1 on the year, striking out 61 and holding opponents to a .208 average in 54.1 innings of work.
Third-ranked Hawai'i Pacific enters the weekend with a 25-1 overall record after sweeping both Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican in the past week. The Sea Warriors lost their only game this season in a 2-0 decision to Grand Canyon on March 2. HPU has won by an average of more than five runs per game, posting 13 shutouts on the year, including four straight.
The trio of senior Ciera Senas and freshmen Chante Tesoro and Caira Pires are leading the Sea Warriors offensively. Senas paces the starters with a .439 average and the three have combined to score 41 runs and drive in another 47. Junior Ashley Valine and senior Sherise Musquiz have dominated in the circle for HPU. Valine leads the starters with a 1.12 ERA and a perfect 8-0 record in 12 appearances, while Musquiz is 12-1 with 48 strikeouts in 70 innings.
The Pioneers fourth opponent of the weekend, St. Martin's, holds a 9-16 record and will meet Sonoma State on Thursday before heading to the tournament. The Saints have dropped four of their last six games including the final two games of a four-game series with Western Washington last week. SMU will open the tournament with games against Cal State San Bernardino, UC San Diego and Sonoma State before meeting East Bay.
Sophomore Morgan Klemm has driven in 15 runs, while senior Kristi Sigafoos is batting .365 to lead the Saints. Meanwhile, sophomore Megan Antonovich is hitting .292 with a team-leading 13 runs. Sophomore Amanda Arnzen is pacing the pitching staff with a 2.86 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 73.1 innings, while freshman Joslyn Eugenio has three wins in 19 appearances and has struck out 34 in 81.2 innings of work.
Northwest Nazarene (4-16) is looking to snap a four-game losing streak after two doubleheader sweeps at Western Oregon last weekend. The Crusaders have won just two of their last 10 games.
Junior Haley Hevern is batting .317 for NNU and leads the Crusaders with nine runs and a .431 on-base percentage. Sophomore Arielle Chao and junior Sarah Varady are tied for the team lead with five RBI. Sophomore Chelsey Anderson has struck out 31 in 59.2 innings of work, earning two wins and posting a 3.75 ERA to lead the staff, while junior Nicole Grummons has posted a 3.89 ERA and two wins.
The Pioneers and MSU Billings are set to kick things off on Friday afternoon at 4:15 at Warrior Field on the Cal State Stanislaus campus. East Bay and Central Washington will cap the opening day of the tournament at 8 p.m. on Field 1 at Pedretti Park.
