HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team, 2-6 in CCAA play and 6-8-1 overall, will host No. 3 U.C. San Diego (6-2 CCAA, 15-3) in a four-game series March 5-7. The two teams will open the series with a doubleheader on Friday at 11 a.m. due to expected rain Friday evening and Saturday.
Saturday and Sunday the two teams are currently scheduled to play a single game starting at 11 a.m. each day, however, the schedule is subject to change based on weather and field conditions.
As a team, the Pioneers are hitting .291 and have a .964 fielding percentage. In CCAA play, the Pioneers have a .296 team batting average a fielding percentage of .967.
Stephen Gatehouse leads the Pioneers in hitting with a .429 batting average. Gatehouse is hitting a team-best .382 in CCAA games. Richie Gonzalez is batting .348 in 23 plate appearances. Nick McManus has a .323 batting average with 14 RBI. McManus is hitting .375 in CCAA play. Devin Grigg and Levi Josewski are hitting .304 and .302 respectively. Josewski leads the Pioneers with three home runs and 16 RBI.
John Howard is hitting .353 while Charlie Sharrer has a .345 batting average in CCAA play.
Grigg tops the pitching with a 2.08 earned run average. He has two saves. Reliever Paul Jinkens is 1-0 with a 3.38 earned run average and 11 strikeouts in five outings. Victor Guerrero has a staff-high 21 strikeouts.
