Pioneers Drop Slugfest with No. 3 UC San Diego, 12-7

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball lost a slugfest to visiting UC San Diego 12-7 on March 6. Both teams combined for 29 hits, seven doubles and a home run.
UC San Diego jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Pioneers scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by Charlie Sharrer. The Tritons added two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pioneers scored four runs on four hits including a pair of run scoring singles off the bats of Stephen Gatehouse and Nick McManus. UC San Diego made it 12-5 in the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brian Engberg and Alex Anicich each had RBI singles to close out the scoring.
The Pioneers banged out 16 hits, but stranded 14 runners. Anicich had a huge day at the plate going 4-for-6 including two RBI. John Howard was 3-for-5 at the plate while Gatehouse, McManus, Levi Josewski, and Sharrer each had two hits. Relievers Felipe Carvajal and Nick Goulet combined to hurl 2.1 scoreless innings.
UC San Diego improves to 18-3 overall and 9-2 in the CCAA. 麻豆传媒社区入口 stands at 5-12-1 and 2-9 in CCAA play.
The four-game series will conclude on March 7 with a single game at 麻豆传媒社区入口 beginning at 11 a.m.
