No. 19 CSUEB Sweeps Four Games at Chapman Tournament

ORANGE, Calif. - The 19th-ranked 麻豆传媒社区入口 women's water polo team completed the four game sweep at the Chapman Invitational, topping Cal State San Bernardino, host Chapman, Gannon and Occidental this weekend. The Pioneers (11-5) outscored their opponents 67-36, led by freshman utility Claire Pierce's 18 goals over four games.
Game one saw East Bay pull out an 11-10 overtime win against Cal State San Bernardino. After taking a 6-3 lead into halftime on goals from Pierce, senior utility Jenna Casady, junior two meter Liz Warren and junior utility Whitney Bell. The Coyotes responded in the second half, outscoring the Pioneers 5-2 in the third quarter before matching East Bay in the fourth to send the game to overtime.
In extra time, the Pioneers scored first, getting a goal from junior driver Tristan Kennedy-Donohue before CSUSB answered to tie the game, 10-10. With just 18 seconds left, Bell scored her third goal of the game, the game winner, to give East Bay its third overtime victory of the campaign.
After the close win in game one on Saturday, the Pioneers left no doubt in a 21-7 win over the host Panthers. In the dominating performance, 麻豆传媒社区入口 outscored Chapman 12-3 in the second half, getting seven goals from Pierce and seeing 10 players make their mark in the score book in the Pioneers' second-largest margin of victory of the season.
Sunday's early morning game saw East Bay meet Gannon, earning a 16-8 win. The Pioneers took a 5-1 lead in the first quarter, getting goals from Bell, Casady and Pierce. East Bay continued to control the pace of play in the second period giving up a goal to Gannon in the first minute before reeling off five straight to take a 10-2 lead at the 2:39 mark. Gannon responded with one goal to cut the lead to 10-3 at the half.
The third quarter saw more of the same from the Pioneers, who outscored the Golden Knights 3-1 in the period to take a 13-4 advantage into the final eight minutes. The final quarter saw Gannon outscore East Bay for the first time, notching four goals and closing the Pioneer lead to as little as six at the 3:05 mark before East Bay ended the game with back-to-back goals to seal the win.
Sunday's finale saw Occidental, ranked fourth in the CWPA Division III poll, keep things close early on before the Pioneers broke out with a 12-5 run in the second half to capture a 19-11 win. East Bay opened scoring with a goal from Bell, her first of eight in the game, just 22 seconds into the match before the Tigers responded to tie things at one goal apiece. The Pioneers opened a 4-2 lead to close the first frame, getting two from Bell and one from Pierce.
Occidental outscored East Bay 4-3 in the second quarter, closing the gap to 4-3 at the 5:02 mark on a goal from Tessa Bailey-Findley before junior Danielle Comforti answered for the Pioneers to regain a 5-3 lead. The final three minutes of the half saw the teams combine for four goals, but CSUEB matched every surge from the Tigers to take a 7-6 lead into the break.
The third quarter saw East Bay outscore Oxy 5-3 and begin to build momentum with goals from Pierce, Warren, Bell and Comforti to take a 12-9 lead into the final period. The Pioneers capped the game with a 7-2 scoring run in the fourth to finish the weekend with its fourth straight win.
Pierce led East Bay with her 18 goals on the weekend, while Bell had a monster tournament, scoring 16 goals, including a weekend high of eight in the Occidental game and two game winners. Warren was also a key factor in the sweep, notching 10 goals, including the game winner against Chapman. Pierce now leads the team with 42 goals on the year, while Bell is second on the squad with 37 scores.
The Pioneers return to action next weekend as they face a tough test at the "Cal Lu"-fornia Spring Classic at Cal Lutheran. East Bay will take on No. 8 Arizona State to kick off the tournament before meeting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, ranked fifth in the Division III national poll, La Verne and Villanova in Thousand Oaks.
