HAYWARD, Calif. - A hot-shooting Cal State San Bernardino team was too much for the 麻豆传媒社区入口 women's basketball in a 77-48 Thursday night loss to the Coyotes at Pioneer Gym. CSUSB hit more than half of its shots from the floor in the win, notching its second victory of the season over the Pioneers (0-17, 0-12 CCAA), who were led by junior guard Colleen Cooley's 11 points.
San Bernardino came out of the gates on fire, building a 24-point lead on 14-of-17 shooting in the opening 10 minutes. Meanwhile, East Bay was held to just five points during that span. With the early lead, the Coyotes took control of momentum and never looked back for the remainder of the half, expanding the lead to as many as 31 points and finishing the half with a 48-20 advantage. For the second straight game, the Pioneers posted just 20 points in the first frame, hitting just 25 percent of their field goals.
Junior forward Kymberly Ooten and senior guard Krystal Urzua got off on the right foot in the first half, dropping in 12 points apiece and combining to go 11-for-16 from the field. San Bernardino turned the ball over just three times in the initial 20 minutes, while recording picking 麻豆传媒社区入口's pockets seven times. On the other end, Cooley's seven points in 11 minutes off the bench led the Pioneers, who matched the Coyotes on the glass and grabbed nine offensive boards in the first stanza.
Despite coming out with a new intensity in the second half and picking up its shooting, 麻豆传媒社区入口 could not overcome the deficit in the final 20 minutes. The Pioneers went point-for-point with the Coyotes, going 13-for-34 from the floor and grabbing 20 rebounds in the half. The 28 second-half points were not enough, however, as Cal State San Bernardino continued to light it up offensively, knocking down 41.4 percent of its shots and turning the ball over just seven times.
Ooten also continued her blistering pace, adding another 12 and finishing with a game-high 24 points on the night. She also paced the Coyotes with seven rebounds and 11-of-20 shooting. Urzua and junior guard Lisa Takata joined Ooten in double figures, notching 17 and 10 points, respectively. Cooley's 11 led East Bay, while junior guard Claudia Nelson chipped in nine and freshman center Marlene MacMillan added eight. Freshman center Lauren Lucchesi led the Pioneers' rebounding efforts, hauling in eight boards and adding three assists on the night.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, continuing the quest for their first win of the campaign against Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos (12-4, 9-3) topped 麻豆传媒社区入口, 62-48, in the teams' first meeting on Dec. 4. Pomona was edged by No. 10 UC San Diego, 71-69, on Thursday night. Tip off of the second game of the Pioneers' four-game homestand is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Pioneer Gym. Live stats for Saturday's matchup will be available .
