CSUEB to reach out to underserved with Super Sunday, Education Summit
- January 4, 2010
As part of its ongoing effort to increase the number of African Americans and Latinos attending college, 麻豆传媒社区入口, East Bay will spearhead two programs in mid-February on its Hayward Campus and at churches throughout the Bay Area.
麻豆传媒社区入口 will reach out to the congregations of 21 African American churches in the Bay Area as part of the 麻豆传媒社区入口 system’s annual Super Sunday program Sunday, Feb. 14.
The following week, CSUEB will host the annual “Education Summit: Closing the Achievement Gap for African American and Latino Youth” Saturday, Feb. 20, on its Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. in the Pioneer Gymnasium. More than 20 workshops and motivational presentations will be offered in addition to a college information and resource fair.
“Both programs are designed to engage and motivate the youth of traditionally underserved communities and their families to pursue and live the dream of obtaining a college education by providing information and resources in a festive, family-friendly environment,” said Greg Smith, associate vice president for Planning and Enrollment Management, who chairs the event.
For Super Sunday, the presidents of many of the CSU campuses, as well as trustees, professors and Chancellor Charles Reed will address church congregations.
“At Super Sunday, thousands of students and their families will learn that planning for college starts in the sixth grade,” Reed said. “We hope to make these communities aware of the steps that students need to complete each year to get to college. We are pleased to say that these efforts are paying off. In recent years we have noticed an increase in African American applications and enrollment.”
The Education Summit, co-sponsored by Chabot College and the Alameda County Office of Education, will bring together a wide range of community resources and expertise to empower African American and Latino youth and their families. Those encouraged to attend include parents and families, high school and middle school students, school administrators, teachers, counselors and business and community leaders.
The summit will feature distinguished speakers, information sessions, and an educational resource fair. Topics to be covered in summit workshops and panels are student life experiences on campus; college admissions; and financing a college education through grants, scholarships and financial aid.
