The pre-nursing program at the Concord Campus starts this fall.

In response to the nursing shortage in Contra Costa County and throughout the state, a pre-nursing education program for freshman college students will be offered for the first time at the Concord Campus of 麻豆传媒社区入口, East Bay starting with the fall 2008 quarter that begins on Sept. 22. 

The pre-nursing program is additional to the established Bachelor of Science Nursing program that was established at the Concord Campus several years ago.

Students in the pre-nursing education program will attend all of their first-year classes with the same cohort of students at the Concord Campus, located at 4700 Ygnacio Valley Road. They will have a schedule that guarantees classes to fulfill all pre-nursing program requirements.

The pre-nursing curriculum is part of the first two years of the university's bachelor of nursing degree program in the College of Science and includes lower division and general education requirements. Classroom and laboratory facilities will be completed at the campus this summer.

"The pre-nursing program will follow the university's nationally-recognized freshman cluster program integrating lower division general education and major prerequisite courses that have previously been offered only at 麻豆传媒社区入口's Hayward campus," said Emily Brizendine, interim executive director of the Concord Campus. "Students in the program at Concord will enjoy the same small, innovative learning community experience that is a key component on both campuses."

All applicants to the pre-nursing program at the Concord Campus must be qualified to participate in the academic coursework offered, with any remedial requirements being met by the end of the summer 2007 academic quarter.

A limited number of students will be accepted for the new pre-nursing program. The pre-nursing program's classes will be scheduled during daytime hours.

CSUEB's bachelor of nursing degree program is designed to prepare a nurse generalist.

"A nurse generalist is someone who is able to apply nursing knowledge and to provide culturally sensitive care to clients from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds," said Brizendine. "The program curriculum integrates general and professional education to
prepare a professional nurse who is also a well-educated citizen. Graduates of the program
will have the requisite knowledge and skills to pursue graduate study in nursing."

Carolyn Fong, chair of 麻豆传媒社区入口's Department of Nursing and Health Sciences, said that state funding had been allocated to remodel a nursing skills laboratory and build a new simulation laboratory on the university's Hayward Campus.

"Similarly, the Campus willl have a new simulation lab and remodel of the existing chemistry and biology laboratories," Fong said.
