A visual and dance-filled look at life behind bars will play out on stage at the 麻豆传媒社区入口 Department of Theatre and Dance performance “Bend the Arc” at the University Theatre on the Hayward campus. Attendees and performers will move from outdoors to inside, and from room to room during the show. The piece culminates with an inclusive and hopeful circle.
Director Nina Haft has partnered with students from the university’s Dance Touring Company to create original dance, movement and poetry about life in prison and the untamable human spirit.
“Our show is an exploration of freedom and the ways it cannot be taken from us unless we surrender our spirits to our captors,” she said. “Are we really so different from those who are locked inside? When we connect across differences and across barriers, we remember that we are more powerful than [those who colonized] our families, our communities and our planet.”
According to the dance department, the inspiration for “Bend the Arc” came from a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who said, "The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
Performances of “Bend the Arc” are scheduled for April 28-29, May 5-6 at 7:30 p.m. and May 7 at 2 p.m. Seating is limited and the shows are expected to sell out quickly. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Catherine Cyr at 510-885-3118 or visit .
